History of the University City Women’s Group
The University City Women’s Group (UCWG) began at a meeting on May 12, 1987, at the University Memorial Hospital. Founders Sally Carlin and Debi Thomas wanted to get together with other women in the Northeast Mecklenburg area. Their goal was to provide an opportunity for women of varied backgrounds and experiences to develop friendships and to share their talents and skills toward the general progress and welfare of the region. Since then, the UCWG has grown to meet the changing needs of its members and the community. We now have active representation in several area organizations and are called upon to aid many local interests and charities.
In February 1992, the UCWG had one of its proudest moments when the University City Regional Library opened before an audience of more than 1,500 people. The UCWG, along with many other groups, worked hard to bring the regional library to fruition. The library continues to serve the community today in countless ways.
The UCWG has established a history of charitable works and donations. Since 1987, the UCWG has donated more than $215,000 to many worthy organizations by sponsoring fashion shows, cookbook sales, raffles, auctions, indoor garage sales, and other fundraising events. Some of the beneficiaries are a pediatric playroom at the University Memorial Hospital, A Child’s Place, The Nevin Center, Carolinas Foundation for Oral Health, the Shelter for Battered Woman, Success by Six, AGAPE Preschool, The Thompson’s Children’s Home, Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, Friendship Trays, Hospice at Charlotte, The Presbyterian Hospital Fund For Buddy Kemp Caring House, The Susan B. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, and Latta Plantation. Other beneficiaries include Children’s Miracle Network, Giving Tree, Community Food Rescue, The Nellie Love Fund at Vance High School, The Red Cross 9/11 Fund, The Salvation Army 9/11 Fund, Hurricane Floyd Relief Fund, KinderMourn, The Arthritis Fund, Classroom Central, donations of turkeys each year to Loaves and Fishes for needy families during the holiday season, USO at Charlotte Douglas Airport, Right Moves for Youth, Shelter Health Services, St. Augustine Project, My Sister’s House, Alexander Youth Network, Florence Crittenden, Pat’s Place Child Advocacy Center, Hospice and Palliative Care, Kids Rein, Beds for Kids, Hope Haven Inc, Hope House Foundation, Present Age Ministries, Communities in Schools, Assistance League of Charlotte, Charlotte Family Housing, Greater Charlotte SPCA, and the University City Library.
The continued growth of the UCWG is due to the energy and dedication of its members, and to the recognition and support by the University City Community.
The University City Women’s Group is grateful to all the women who have united to make our organization a highly visible and respected part of the University area of Mecklenburg County. We intend to be a viable presence for many years to come.
